Visual Development During the COVID-19 Pandemic

This event has expired.
September 23, 2024 @ 8:00 AM - 9:00 AM

Brief Description: Being able to see, hear, and feel is one of the first few achievements that we obtain in infancy. In addition to biological maturation, decades of research have discovered the role of sensory experience in the development of perceptual capacities. Focusing on face perception, a fundamental visual perceptual ability, my work has consistently shown how infants’ visual perceptual abilities were shaped by the visual experience via its statistical characteristics. Moreover, those experiential influences, established based on the data collected in normal times, are further corroborated by our recent studies examining the impact of COVID-19 on infants’ perceptual development. Together, these studies present early perceptual development as an adaptive process driven by sensory experiences.
